Main power of air-separation industry—steel industry
steel industry is the main power for the development of
air-separation industry which lead air-separation industry into its
golden time.
According to the oxygen consumption of steel industry, during the process in the blast furnace, converter, continuous casting and rolling of the traditional process, the oxygen consumption of per ton steel is about 120 Nm3/h. Every year millions of tons of steel production scale need match air separation plants with the capacity of 15000 Nm3/h, when not in oxygen-enriched blast furnace can be reduced to 10000 Nm3/h. When using COREX puddling technology, electric converter, continuous casting and rolling steel are installed, the capacity of the spare parts required for each million tons of steel shall be increased to 50,000 Nm3/h, which is three to five times to traditional technology.

Steel industry is the big customer to air-separation worldwide, accounting for 60%~70% of total amount. 60s~80s of last century, the dramatic development boomed air-separation industry. After Japan introduced oxygen converters, the steel output increased from ten million tons to 100 million ton during ten years, the output of oxygen increased 20 times during 16 years. After a detour, China’s steel industry got back on track in the 1980s and exceeded 100 million tons in 1996. 340 million tons in 2005. China became the largest steel country in the world in 2005 with 340 million tons which was more than the sum of the three, Japan, the United States and Russia. And it is expected to be 620 million tons in 2010, more than the sum total of countries that ranked from 2nd to 21st behind.
From 2001 to 2010, due to the rapid development of national economy and the global manufacturing transferring to China, Chinese steel industry promoted developed rapidly. With the average annual output of 46 million tons of crude steel increased, per million tons of supporting air separation unit 15000 Nm3/h, a single steel, need new air separation unit capacity is 690000 Nm3/h.Thus, the gas industry was booming, and the golden period of Chinese air separation was brought forward.
During this period, Chinese air separation industry has followed the world’s advanced level and improves its competitive power. Both software and hardware facilities are ready for the take-off of the air separation industry.

Process description of liquid air separation plant
After impurity removal, air is taken by compressor and compressed to
~1.1MPa. After cooling down, harmful components, such as moisture, CO2, C2H2 are removed by purifying system.
After purification, compressed air is cooled down by the main heat exchanger and cold refrigerator, and sent to rectification column for rectification. Through sub-cooler, liquid air, liquid waste nitrogen and liquid pure nitrogen are sent to upper column for secondary rectification. In upper column, liquid oxygen at 99.6% is obtained at bottom, which is delivered out of cold box via sub-cooling as product.
Waste nitrogen is drawn from top of upper column. Through heat exchanger, it is expanded to provide coldness to the whole system. After warming up, it is delivered out of cold box and divided into 2 streams. First stream goes to purifying system for regeneration of molecular sieve. Second stream is delivered to pre-cooling system to cool down the cooling water.
While third stream of waste nitrogen delivered out of cold box is compressed by recycle compressor and booster of turbine. Afterwards, it goes into cold box and is cooled down by heat exchanger. Cool gas is expanded subsequently to supply coldness to whole system. After expansion, it is warmed up in heat exchanger and goes for another round of circulation.
The production of argon works on hydrogen-free rectification process specified as following described: Liquid argon fraction is drawn out from the upper column into crude argon column and pure argon column, where liquid argon product is got through rectification.

Process description of gas air separation plant
Eliminated from mechanical impurity by the air filter, the required
amount of process air is compressed by centrifugal air compressor to
~0.5MPa. Afterwards, it goes into water-cooling tower for cleaning and
pre-cooling. The removal of harmful components, such as moisture, CO2, C2H2 are carried out by activated alumina and molecule sieve in molecule sieve purifier, which will automatically alternate.
After purification, small stream of compressed air is compressed secondarily by booster end of turbine. Through cooling via water cooler, it goes into main heat exchanger for secondary cooling. Then it is drawn from middle part of heat exchanger to expander of turbine. Afterwards, expanded air is sent to upper column for rectification.
After purification, large stream of compressed air is cooled down to its dew point temperature in main heat exchanger and goes to lower column. Through primary rectification, liquid nitrogen is got the top of lower column, and liquid air is got at the bottom. Through sub-cooling via liquid air &liquid nitrogen sub-cooler, liquid nitrogen and liquid air are sent into respective position of upper column. Through secondary rectification, gas oxygen is got at the bottom of upper column. Through warming up to ambient temperature in sub-cooler and main heat exchanger; gas oxygen is delivered out of cold box into oxygen pipe as product. The waste nitrogen got at the top part of upper column is warmed up through sub-cooler and main heat exchanger and delivered out of cold box. One stream goes to purifier for regeneration of molecular sieve; the other stream goes to water-cooling tower of pre-cooling system, to cool down the recycle water.

Application of gas hydrogen in petroleum industry
It need to add hydrogenation and by de-sulfur and hydrogenation
cracking to extract crude oil, petroleum refining process need to add
hydrodesulfurizer.
The amount of hydrogen used in the petroleum industry is second only to synthetic ammonia. Hydrogen is mainly used for naphtha hydrodesulfurization, gas oil hydrodesulfurization, fuel oil hydrodesulfurization, improved flame height and hydrocracking of aircraft fuels, etc field. Hydrogen is mainly used for C3 fractions hydrogenation, gasoline hydrogenation C6-C8 fraction hydrodealkylation and the production of cyclohexane and so on.

Application of gas hydrogen in petrochemical industry
1) A 1000t/d scale ammonia plant is used as a raw material gas for
ammonia, methanol and petroleum refining. It need 336 cubic meters for
per ton of ammonia, and if the ammonia is produced on a large scale. The
main cost is comes from the hydrogen.
A 2500t/d scale methanol plant, each production of 1 ton of methanol needs hydrogen 560 cubic meters;
Hydrogen is also the organic hydrogenation reaction feed gas.
2) Synthesis of organic compounds
Hydrogen and carbon monoxide synthesis compounds to a variety of organic compounds , such as ethylene glycol synthesis, synthesis of polymethanes, alcohol homologous reaction,etc.

Application of carbon dioxide in chemical industry

Application of gas nitrogen in Coal chemical industry
In the small water gas production of ammonia plant, the proportion of
nitrogen to hydrogen ratio is table after adding the nitrogen, which
smooths the operation and reduce the consumption of synthetic ammonia;
In addition, it also use the refined nitrogen (99.99%) to protect the
catalyst; With pure liquid nitrogen washing refined Hydrogen and
nitrogen mixture, so that the inert gas (methane and hydrogen) is extremely
small, the contact of carbon monoxide and oxygen are no more than
20PPm. The consumption of nitrogen wash and nitrogen are about 750m3/t
ammonia. Oxygen is functioned as the evaporator of pulverized coal or
heavy oil, nitrogen involved in the synthesis and function as raw
materials for gas, and be the safety gas of device (catalyst coal
protection will use 99.99% pure nitrogen).

Application of gas nitrogen in nitrogen fertilizer industry
Nitrogen is the main raw material of nitrogen fertilizer industry, such
as ammonium nitrate with 36% nitrogen , ammonium sulfate n with
21% nitrogen, urea with 46.7% nitrogen. Nitrogen is also used to
replace air or gas in pipelines and containers before the start of
production of the nitrogen fertilizer plant or after overhaul to ensure
safe operation. Lime nitrogen is a kind of chemical nitrogen fertilizer,
1 ton of lime nitrogen will consume nitrogen 300~500m3; nitrogen is
mainly used for ammonia synthesis, ammonia is the main raw material of
chemical fertilizer industry and basic organic chemical industry.

Application of gas oxygen in coal gasification and liquefaction industry
Coal gasification industry is a large user of oxygen. Oxygen is used as
gasification agent of pulverized coal in the process of coal
gasification, such as the powder gasification, per ton of synthesis
ammonia consumes 500~900m3 of oxygen; Oxygen is used as an oxidant to
convert solid coal into a combustible gas mixture. In the process of
coal liquefaction, oxygen is used as a vehicle for the conversion of
coal from hydrogen-depleted solid hydrocarbons to hydrogen-rich liquid
hydrocarbons. The consumption of oxygen required to produce 1 ton of
coal is at least 0.3 tons of oxygen per ton of coal, and may also reach 1
ton per ton of coal. So the production of 10 million barrels per day of
synthetic fuel device needs 10 to 20 sets of parallel installed oxygen plant with the capacity of 58400`73000m3/h.

Internal compression air separation plant
Internal compression air separation
plant process is to produce gas products with medium/high pressure
directly from ASU without oxygen, nitrogen or argon compressors.
Internal compressor plant is also customer-oriented.
Compared with external compression process, the internal compression process features on that the product oxygen pressure is achieved in cold box with LOX pump. At present, the internal compression process is widely used in ASU plants which require big amount of liquid product and higher delivery pressure of gas product.
Without product compressors, so no high temperature gas product; less mechanical failures; safe operation;
When liquid product amount (total quantity of LOX, LIN and LAr) is higher than 8-10% of total product quantity, internal compression plant has lower power consumption than external compression plant. When liquid product amount (total quantity of LOX, LIN and LAr) is lower than 8-10% of total product quantity, external compression plant has lower power consumption.
